Many know about Irish Setters.
Few know about English Setters.

Q:  Description:  “The English Setter is a medium-sized dog with long-silky white coat flecked either with tan (called orange belton) or black (blue Belton) or white with black fleck and tan points on muzzle, forelegs and hind legs (tri color) Liver and lemon flecking are also possible, but rare.”

Anzil’s English Setters are the hunting breed therefore the ONLY long hair is on their legs and tail – called feathers and require much less grooming than show dogs.

Anzil’s English Setters have produced liver and white, black and white, tri-colour and orange and white beauties.

Q:  Are my living quarters suitable for an English Setter?  Indoor living is recommended.

Anzil’s English Setters all live outdoors in their individual insulated doghouse and kennel.  They have a huge fenced yard to run in and do so for long periods of time each day.  They are brought into the home when pups to socialize them and to get them used to the ‘curious’ things found in homes.

We have many who have their setters living inside rather than outside.

We agree with “Tying a dog with a chain or rope is never a good idea because the dog cannot escape if threatened by predators, fire, or the like, and tying a dog can make it aggressive.”  Instead, for outside dogs, we recommend a kennel or a fenced in yard.  Also, it is strongly recommended that dogs not be left on their own outside for extended periods of time as they will become very independent and aloof.

Q: How do English Setters mix with children?  English Setters are one of the most suitable breeds to have around children.

Anzil’s English Setters have been known to have toddlers sleeping with the pup in the kennel inside the house because the little ones did not want to be away form their new friend.  Many have told us how amazing they are with children.  You will see in one photo a Setter babysitting its young master (see "A Dog's Prayer" page).

Q:  Do English Setters have genetic problems? Although a sturdy and healthy breed, the English Setter is susceptible to some genetic problems, as with all breeds of dogs: hip and elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, allergies, deafness.

Anzil’s English Setters have yet to encounter any of the mentioned problems.

Q:  Is an English Setter a good watchdog?

Anzil’s English Setters will definitely let you know when someone is arriving. If they were given a chance they would probably lick you to death.  We have never seen an Anzil English Setter attack a guest but they probably would to protect a loved one.

Q:  What about neutering?

Anzil’s English Setters have never been neutered and never will be while in our possession unless it is medically needed.  We feel strongly about that.  We see no need to go against nature.
